Sustainability Nexuses What is the Purpose

LAND sds in March of 2013, launched the Sustainability Voice News. The LANDsds Sustainable Voice was a continuation and spin off from the original blog. The LAND sds blog remains to discuss the company but there was need to advance the topic space and create a new portal of news. The original blog has over 1000 pieces of content providing news, information and data from around the world on energy, sustainability and development. The company used the content also as referential and analytical tools to determine trends, legislation, production and the market. The content was limited when on the business site and needed to managed tightly. Moreover, the content became an over powering sector of the site so, began the Voice.

The work of the Sustainable Voice is to provide an inclusive voice across industries to share sustainability news and ideas across sectors, platforms, groups, disciplines and technologies. LANDsds Sustainable Voice seeks to be the sustainable nexus point to aid SUSTAINABILITY around the world.

This portal was my brain child and important as the role and significance of sustainability, I felt needed to have a connection of the dots. As a multidisciplinary professional, specialization can lead to a sort of tunnel vision. Further, I often share that words are not universal terms across disciplines. The example of the term "quality" means different things and is interpreted uniquely depending on your discipline. What quality means to an engineer is different than that of a technology, financial, marketing and operation's professional. In understanding disciplinary differences there was a unique opportunity to share Sustainability across disciplines and platforms to have an integrated dialogue forming a web of information in one unique space, the Sustainable Voice promoting the Sustainability Nexuses.

The work has received glowing feedback to date as I hope that the site is informative, accessible and digestible. Content is so important, relevant and idea shaping in today's world and I wish to provide the highest quality content to our existing and future readers who are finding us in Google, Bing, and Wordpress. We are providing our content to Pinterest, Tumblr, LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter as well.

This work is a labor of love while mastering content architecture everyday to give voice to the many producing, working, building, creating, growing, educating, developing, resourcing, innovating, effecting, reporting, advocating, servicing, legislating for or not for sustainability in the various forms that it falls to create a sustainable ecosystem.

Today is Earth Day a special day of reflection and a call to action to consider the importance of Earth to our lives, families, pursuits, dreams and hopes. We operate each day on this Earth infrequently considering the role of Earth's connection and its sustainability to our daily lives.

We only see the land under our feet and not reference the entire sphere we call, Earth. Today, we can acknowledge and accept our inextricable linkage to Earth's sustainability by choosing to "Think Sustainably!"

Consulting is a mixed artistry profession that requires leadership on topic, industry and mastery of mind, systems and organizational structuring. Consultants have been given a bad name over time -charlatan. These names derived from the internal pressure consultants manage daily to gain, maintain and sustain client's satisfaction. Often consultants are hired to parrot the client's wishes providing a mimicry of the data versus exposing the beauty in the data to rudder changes. The better solution is to embrace the data and let it have meaning in driving leadership and stewardship.

Today, with the massive amounts of data (Big Data) and companies engaging in broad stroke requirements, consulting is more important in the initiation of strategy, organizational change and development, planning, and implementation. Consultants as third party professionals performing drill down analyses are hired to clarify and justify. When freed from constraints, consultants can unleash mastery, becoming a creative disruptive force aiding in the production of quality, lean, profitability and sustainability.

Sustainability Consultants can identify risk-reward-value within practice, process, performance and/or policy. When companies operate from their internal hard drive or mental models their analyses can be myopic, granular and leading. The constrained data will lead companies down a rabbit whole of fantasy, and ill prepared to manage change and disruption. Consultants with mastery are artists, operating on an organization, a subject and/or a product canvas constructing a unique voice for the client. Clients can choose to hire a surgeon or a therapist, one cuts deep and the other performs surface solutions.

The advancement of sustainability is driving educational institutions to develop sustainability programs. The approach in the development of curricula will be defined by the lens and acumen of the institution. The importance of the news identifying "UF faculty workshop hopes to bring sustainability concepts to the classroom" by WUFT News is not just the institutions drive to develop curricula but how these programs will feed into the sustainability of the industry and the job market.

"University of Florida (UF) faculty members will come together in May to promote the sustainability curriculum at the university."

"The University of Florida Fellows in Sustainability Prairie Project Workshop, which met for the first time in 2010, hosts professors for lectures and discussions to develop new courses in an effort to introduce sustainability concepts into the university."

"The workshop will include about 30 UF professors, according to the UF Office of Sustainability website. The project, based on a national program created at Emory University, focuses on developing new coursework and concepts for sustainability curriculum. Professors are selected from a variety of academic backgrounds."

The importance of understanding sustainability across disciplines provides a high level focus on the topic for effective dissemination across departments. The approach of UF to engage only its staff negates the active work of experts such as, ACF Enterprises who have already developed online, as well as classroom tools for the distribution and rollout of sustainability education.

When institutions of higher learning and business come together for the purpose of determining a plan and focus for a critical topic i.e. sustainability, curriculum must be timely, appropriate and shovel ready for students who will seek positions in the field.
