Tyra Oldham LAND sds Deliver Rural and Urban Research

September 9, 2013

Release by LAND sds

Sustainability is an integral part of research today. Sustainability research is aided by understanding the unique qualities of rural and urban development. Dr. Tyra Oldham, LAND sds continue to identify sustainability areas that define our economy, businesses, organizations, technologies, energy and infrastructure to support socioeconomics, economic development and social justice.

The study, "Sustainability Infrastructure Connection of Rural to Urban" reviews how the lack of connectivity between rural cites and urban centers cause instability and lower state performance. It highlights lack of synthesis in states that are in danger of economic downturns in part but collectively have an effect on new energy adoption, technological growth and global competitiveness, as well as the ability to manage changing energy and resource prices.

To learn more about LAND sds sustainability work or have Dr. Oldham present this expanding topic to your organization on developing  rural and urban sustainability contact LAND sds at land@landsds.com for more information and scheduling.

By Dr. Tyra Oldham

In today's world business intelligence is key to discerning information in this big data world. Sustainability assists in data acquisition and analyses as the organization through constructed planning allows metrics to be established to identify gaps, constraints, risks and issues of importance.

The construction of today's business world is dynamic, distributed and digitally invasive putting pressure on resources that are meaningfully managed within the company's carbon footprint. Sustainability is the process of clarified purpose for the aggregation of resources.

LAND sds is passioned in delivering sustainability and Dr. Tyra Oldham seeks to discuss the importance of sustainability within your organization to assist in identifying the road to sustainability and the five steps to adoption. Sustainability supports the identification, development and implementation to manage the present  and future complexities presented.

President’s View on Climate is an Executive Order

By Dr. Tyra Oldham, LAND sds, February 14, 2013

It has taken some time to digest the recent State of the Union speech this week on energy and climate change. The dialogue on climate change has aired on fact, fiction or under study yet, “Obama Warns Congress to Act on Climate Change, or He Will” from the Scientific American rolls out the warning. The warming and warning encourages a strategy to implement a plan to engage with the effects of climate change.

"But for the sake of our children and our future, we must do more to combat climate change," Obama said last night. "It's true that no single event makes a trend. But the fact is, the 12 hottest years on record have all come in the last 15. Heat waves, droughts, wildfires, floods -- all are now more frequent and intense.

"We can choose to believe that Superstorm Sandy, and the most severe drought in decades, and the worst wildfires some states have ever seen were all just a freak coincidence," he added. "Or we can choose to believe in the overwhelming judgment of science -- and act before it's too late."

Obama openly waved the threat of using his executive authority to regulate the release of carbon dioxide from industry sources if lawmakers fail to "act soon." He suggested that Congress reconsider legislation similar to the cap-and-trade bill pursued in the past by Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and retired Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.), a program that continues to be reviled among many Republicans.

"But if Congress won't act soon to protect future generations, I will," Obama said. "I will direct my Cabinet to come up with executive actions we can take, now and in the future, to reduce pollution, prepare our communities for the consequences of climate change, and speed the transition to more sustainable sources of energy."

Carol Browner, Obama's former climate adviser and a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress, described the speech in a statement as "a big win for those who want action on climate change and believe now is the time to act."

The speech highlights the leadership platform to start a national conversation on climate.  As stated by Michael Oppenheimer, "It's probably the best speech that a sitting American president has ever given on the subject."  Oppenheimer is a professor of geosciences and international affairs at Princeton University.

The challenge is to develop a political and national platform that syncs to the role of government and the impact climate has to cities, citizens and business. The strategy concedes to a short and long-term plan encompassing debt, taxes and costs to drive the conversation to a point of action and not rhetoric that goes beyond President Obama term in office.

Green Dubai Thinking Sustainability

By Dr Tyra Oldham, LAND sds, February 7, 2013

LAND sds Green News: As nation continue to think sustainability and greening their world, programs will be set forth establishing investment and planning for sustainability. One such nation is Dubai's "Green Dubai" initiative to train, educate and innovate green within Dubai.

In implementation of a decision issued by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, and as part of Dubai Strategic Plan 2015 for applying the specifications of green buildings to all the buildings and premises in Dubai with the aim of keeping Dubai a healthy city with a clean and pollution free environment, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), in co-operation with Dubai Municipality, has launched the Green Building Regulations & Specifications, a set of specifications and guidelines for regulating the criteria of the structure that allows adequacy in the consumption of electricity, water and renewed energy as part of the green buildings project in Dubai, which will make savings of around AED10 billion until 2030.

Greening is the method to generate infrastructural changes yet, eduation, planning and strategy must undergird the methods to obtain sustainability. Sustainability requires collaboration and integration of the ecosystem for success, return-on-investment and growth to produce sustainable cities.

Technology Giants Search and Enable Smart Grid

By Dr. Tyra Oldham, LAND sds,  January 18, 2013

The outstanding future is what lay ahead and the current plan to arrive. The energy and technology path is developing uniquely as convergence of demand meets requirement in the quest for energy efficacy and infrastructural soundness.  Requirements for continuous energy are the subject of “Google, Yahoo getting their own smart grid” raised by Sustainable Business Oregon looks at the future of company commanding energy solutions and extension of Google Energy.

Regional development think tank Joint Venture Silicon Valley certainly has, and is now launching a public-private partnership with Google, Yahoo, Intuit and Juniper Networks, among others, to develop a smart energy grid centered around Moffett Field.

Under the initiative, an 8.25 square-mile zone that encompasses parts of North Mountain View and North Sunnyvale will become a shared testing ground for cutting edge cleantech solutions. Both of the peninsula cities and utilities providers in their jurisdiction will also participate.

“We’re trying to do two things,” Joint Venture President & CEO Russell Hancock told the Silicon Valley Business Journal. “First, we’re trying to reduce Silicon Valley’s carbon footprint. The second is we’re trying to promote Silicon Valley as the answer to this problem.”

Elements of the smart energy zone that Joint Venture hopes to have up and running by 2020 include renewable energy sources like solar, fuel cells and biogas, plus thermal and electric energy storage.

Together with electric car charging stations and analytics to ensure efficient energy usage, Hancock describes the future system as “maybe the world’s most integrated example of a smart grid.”

The power of business to combine resources to integrate solutions for energy efficiency and enabling renewable clean sustainability is the future that will drive economic and energy development for today and the future. The analytics and continued planning to produce energy and environment solutions will increase return-on-investment for business, community and stakeholders. The "smart grid" is not just the road and/or systems enabling energy but an intelligence and knowledge management for harnessing information and building an ecosystem.
