Tyra Oldham: The Role of Business Intelligence

Published May 20, 2013

By Dr. Tyra Oldham, LAND sds

As businesses search for new solutions when margins and cost management is a necessary factor under scrutiny. The answer lies in  efficiency, resource and vertical integration to leverage profit, productivity, efficiency and business growth.

The use of Business Intelligence (BI) is key to determining impact, risk, gaps, constraints, opportunities and innovation within departments, teams, systems, processes, platforms, programs and operations. BI can shape companies to new highs in an intelligence age where the management of knowledge is vital to sustainability. Think government purchasing which is online, dynamic, interactional with high capital (intellectual, economic and human) demands. Consider the importance of analytics in the capture of information for smooth and tactical decisions, as well as processes and systems are integral to technological interface. BI looks across these platform for effective strategies to success and connect the dots.

LAND sds views BI is critical and tactical to competitive advantage. LAND sds is a company's third party intelligence partner and source for growth, projects and programs to establish your next profit center to gain competitive leverage.

Profits and The New Capital

In today's business world is all about profits and revenues? I contend not! It is bigger than profits and return-on-investment (ROI) is not just a slice of the pie but the pie. Businesses moving forward manage by balancing and optimizing capital (economic, human and intellectual). Moreover, ROI is not only money but the ecosystem, supply chain, environment, energy, stakeholders and more.  "Does MONEY come FIRST in business? Not according to Apple! by Bernard Marr explore the shift.

States,

"You don’t need me to tell you that the reason businesses exist is to make money. If they don’t deliver bottom line results they don’t deliver return to their shareholders and owners. So we need to keep an eye on things like profits, profit margins and we have to make sure we don’t run out of cash – so cash flow is another element to watch. I guess little disagreement here…

However, when I work with businesses I often find that those financial metrics like top line growth and bottom line results are the only thing they focus on - and that is really dangerous!

Steve Jobs said, Somebody once told me, ‘Manage the top line, and the bottom line will follow.’ What's the top line? It's things like, why are we doing this in the first place? What's our strategy? What are customers saying? How responsive are we? Do we have the best products and the best people? Those are the kind of questions you have to focus on.’ [Source]

"Let’s look at Apple as an example. They decided to put customers and technology before financial performance in their performance framework, believing that if you deliver the products customers love, profits will follow. Shortly after Steve Jobs resumed control of Apple in 1997, he said:

You’ve got to start with the customer experience and work back to the technology — not the other way around.” [Source]"

Take it further, profits are not the only barometer of success. Today, other factors are managed and valued such as, environment, efficiencies, energy, supply chain development and waste reductions. Yes, these factors influence and effect the bottom line but go beyond the norm. Look at BP a manufacturer of profits but negative eco managers producing backlash. Ford and many others supporting cancer. Pink the new brand color.

Today, the pendulum swings to customer care, social capital, environment, clean and green, product development and technology, as well as social media connectivity that assists in driving revenues. Companies that can continue to make money in the dark and hidden only have to wait before the light will shine upon their industry. Profits to today are maximized by balancing attention and efficiencies carefully. I suggest companies plan for social breakeven where tolerance and profits collide to sustainanability.
